ROOM TRANSFER

At the beginning of each semester Bard Hall and Georgian Residents can apply to transfer to either another room in Dorm Housing (Bard Hall, the Georgian Residence) or to a unit in Apartment Housing (Bard-Haven Towers, 106&154 Haven Avenue). (click PDF for single student housing unit descriptions and monthly rental rates). Students living in apartment housing must reside in their current unit for at least one year before they are eligible to apply for a transfer.

Students who transfer within Dorm Housing are issued a Dorm Housing Academic Year Contract for the new room. The previous contract is cancelled and billing adjustments are made to reflect any changes in contract costs. The second semester installment is calculated based on the daily rate of the new room.

Students who transfer to a unit in Apartment Housing are issued a standard New York City lease with additional riders that pertain to Columbia University. Prior to making an appointment to sign your lease, you must complete a Dorm Housing Contract Cancellation Form and make arrangements to check-out of your unit and return your keys.

Apartment leases are issued on the 1st and 15th day of each month. Leases expire on May 31. Leases are annually renewed on June 1 provided you maintain full-time student status, maintain all terms and conditions of the lease and are in good financial standing with the University. You are responsible for the rent throughout the term of your lease including the summer months. Rent payments are due the first of each month. Rent payments made by check can only be accepted from the tenant of record. Failure to make payments in accordance with the terms of your lease may result in legal action as provided by the law. Rental rates are subject to an annual increase each June 1.

Who is Eligible to Participate in Room Transfers?

You are eligible to participate if:

  • You hold a Bard Hall/Georgian Residence Dorm Housing Contract and

  • You are a full-time matriculated student enrolled at the Medical Center and

  • You are in good financial standing with the University

How Does this Process Work?

Application packages are available from the Housing Office and are accepted on a per semester basis.
Fall term: 9/18/07-12/15/07 Spring term: 1/16/08-4/06/08.

Applications are accepted on a first come first served basis. The transfer list is then generated by recording each student's unit type request. Transfers are offered based on unit availability. You will be called or sent an e-mail when a room/unit becomes available. You are given only one offer per unit type. You have 3 days to accept or reject the transfer offer. During that time you can view the unit(s). If you accept the transfer, you will need to make an appointment to sign a new Dorm Housing Contract or Apartment Housing Lease. You will have 2 days to move to your new unit. If you do not accept the transfer offer, your transfer request for that particular unit will be cancelled and the unit will be offered to the next student.
